"Mapping": A Juried Exhibition
Curated by Maddy Rosenberg
June 29 - July 30, 2023
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 29, 2023, 5-7 p.m.
440 Gallery is proud to announce the 2023 Summer Theme Exhibition, Mapping, juried by Maddy Rosenberg, featuring 26 artists selected from a national call for art. From the Imago Mundi to the GPS routes we follow on our phones, maps are an ancient yet ever-evolving form of communication.
This show of contemporary, multimedia works celebrates the artist as both explorer and cartographer. Artists unveil and invent new ways to see the world, be it symbolically, metaphorically, conceptually or geographically. While a map can serve as a visual record of a concrete space, in Mapping artists explore how art can chart the world beyond the tangible. Maps were once only physical, created to preserve the past as a guide for the future. Yet now, maps can be digital apparitions that vanish when the destination is reached. Mapping becomes more than diagramming the relative position of parts. Artists’ visual pathways present where we have been, where we are and where we are going.
Rosenberg writes about the collection:
“Narrowing down almost 800 works to a final 26 was an assiduous task — so many could easily have been included in the final exhibition. I was focused on choosing a selection that pushed the idea of "mapping" conceptually in various directions, with artists employing diverse approaches in choice of their medium and technique. I ensured that the range of materials utilized all aspects of the intimate, but thoughtfully constructed, gallery space, starting with the two-dimensional print on the wall, then on to more textured and sometimes unusual materials of relief work, and finally fully into the space with small, surprising sculptural pieces.”
Artists chosen for the show:
Audrey Anastasi, Eric Banks, Daniel Baxter, Sophia Brown, Ingrid Butterer, Alexandra Catalina, Jan Dickey, Deanna Dorangrichia, Hayley Ferber, Kiani Ferris, Chen Gao, Heather Jones, Devan Kallas, Johannes Knoops, Carole Kunstadt, Judith Lieberman, George Lorio, Jennifer Markowitz, Carol Morrison, Francesca O'Malley, Dara Oshin, Renetta Sitoy, Linda Vigdor, Ripley Whiteside, Harold Wortsman and Josef Zutelgte
