ABOUT THE CURATOR

We are delighted to have Grace R. Freedman, Ph.D. (she/her), as this show’s juror. Founder of Why Not Art, Freedman's projects celebrate the vitality of the Brooklyn arts community by presenting interdisciplinary art shows in alternative spaces. Freedman has served as guest curator for two shows at the Old Stone House, has created pop-up installations for the Atlantic Art Walk in 2022 and 2023, and has hosted four fundraising art exhibits under Why Not Art’s Artistic Philanthropy program, benefiting CHiPs, Beam Center and Dancewave.

A Brooklyn resident and community advocate for over 25 years, Freedman brings her in-depth experience in nonprofit fundraising, youth-centered arts programming, community building, and fostering collaboration among diverse groups to help create these inclusive and dynamic experiences at Why Not Art. Select professional experience includes Director of Development and Strategic Initiatives at Beam Center, where she won major grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, NYS and NYC Cultural Affairs, ConEdison, and others to support their large public art installations and youth arts apprenticeships, and Board Chair and Co-Chair of Capital Campaign at Dancewave where she oversaw the Board-directed Campaign to fund and build a new arts center in Gowanus. She currently serves on the Gowanus Improvement District Planning Committee and as Co-Chair with Forth on Fourth Avenue (FOFA).
