One Breath Rising: Ruben Gonzalez

Sunday, April 8 @ 4:40pm
One Breath Rising Presents Ruben Gonzalez

To listen to the guitar-playing of Ruben Gonzalez is to enter a journey that crosses borders between distant places and spaces. South and North America, politics and poetry, pain and humor—Gonzalez’s sounds and lyrics are reflected in a world vision that includes politics and popular stories. His music echoes a vast set of influences from Latin American rhythms and genres, including jazz and rock.

Originally from San Juan, Argentina, Ruben composes and plays the guitar with a deeply personal and thought-provoking voice. In 2012, the American composer Philip Glass invited Gonzalez to showcase his musical ingenuity at the annual Tune-in Festival at the Park Avenue Armory. Gonzalez was joined on stage by singer-songwriter Zack Glass and Canadian fiddler Ashley MacIsaac in an afternoon of new compositions.

Ruben Gonzalez has recorded three CDs: Foto de mi Aldea (2006), La Libertad (2010), and I’m Working on Something (2015) a collection of original songs geared toward young people. He is currently working on recording a compilation of new compositions influenced by his native Argentinian folkloric rhythms and themes.

Please join us the second Sunday of every month for 440 Gallery’s jazz and spoken word series curated by Darryl Alladice.

Suggested donation $10.
