New York-based Sam Newsome made a name for himself as a tenor saxophonist in the Terence Blanchard band in the early 90s. His music now embraces experimental and avant garde concepts in which his compositions are derived from a personal sound palette, much along the lines of a visual artist who paints with notes and sounds rather than shapes and colors. In addition to being associate professor of jazz studies at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, Newsome continues to tour, record and develop new ways to explore the soprano saxophone’s sonic terrain. 440 Gallery is thrilled to be a part of the release of Newsome’s “Sopranoville,” his just-released CD of “New Works for Prepared and Non-Prepared Saxophone.”
