440 Gallery Artist :: Susan Greenstein

Susan Greenstein grew up in Queens and has lived and worked in Brooklyn since she was a college student at Pratt Institute. She graduated from Pratt I in 1981, where received her BFA in Fine Arts - Drawing and Painting and went on to receive her MSE from Queens College 1983. Susan spent 12 years illustrating children 's books & articles in newspapers and magazines.

Following the birth of her daughter, Gina, in 1994, Susan began to teach art to young children through the organization, Studio in A School where she enjoyed the tenure of 12 years. She is currently teaching both elementary & high school students at Brooklyn Friends School. She has found teaching art to be a way to keep her excitement & wonder of art fresh. Susan feels that her young students ' enthusiasm of art is contagious. When she is not teaching, Susan dedicates her time working mostly on site in & around Brooklyn. She is most intrigued by the textures and patterns she finds in community gardens as well as in the local architecture. In the summer, Susan spends time in New Hampshire studying and painting a very different type of landscape and light. Susan finds watercolors to work well when painting on site. She also does a lot of on site drawing in many urban settings, especially in subways.

Susan lives with her husband Phil who is also a painter & her daughter, Gina & their cat Kalo.
