Katharine Hopkins was born and raised in Colorado, a location that is deeply entwined with her sense of self and place. She has an undergraduate degree in political science that has long fueled her creative explorations. After graduating with an MFA in printmaking in 2007, Katharine moved to New York City. Because of the stark contrast between the cityscape and the open spaces of Colorado, she has long been fascinated by the urban setting. Her work explores the archetypal qualities of landscape and its symbolic relationship to our contemporary society. Most recently, Katharine has been infatuated with the complex symbolism of the chair, raising questions regarding our sense of being and object reality, mortality and transcendence. Katharine has also begun to explore how traditional mediums such as printmaking and drawing can become more object like, or conversely, removed of all object qualities. This has led to an exploration of installation and animated drawings.
