12th Annual Small Works Show

440 Gallery announces the opening of its 2016 Call for Entries for the 12th annual Small Works Show. This national juried exhibition celebrates the innovation of artists who create work on a small scale, in a broad range of media and styles. The exhibition will be on display in the 440 Gallery Park Slope, Brooklyn space from Thursday, December 1, 2016 through Saturday, December 24, 2016.

Juror: JoAnne McFarland is the former Exhibitions Director of A.I.R. Gallery, the first artist-run gallery devoted to women artists in the United States. McFarland is a practicing artist and poet, with works in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and Columbus Museum of Art. The author of eight poetry collections, her latest is Loose Horse in the Valley. More information below.

Eligibility: Open to U.S. resident artists at least 18 years old. Work must be no more than 12" in any direction including the framing or mounting, or video monitors. This will be strictly enforced. There is no theme, but we welcome all media including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, drawings, sculpture in any medium, collage, printmaking, photography and digital media.  All work must be suitably framed, wired and ready for hanging. Works on paper must be framed under plexiglass or glass. Maximum weight of sculpture: 30 pounds. Wall mounted monitors must be provided for videos.


Acceptance: Accepted work may be refused if it does not conform to the entered image. Absolutely NO substitutions of accepted works will be allowed. All accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit.

Sales:  The gallery will take 30% commission on any work sold. Work not for sale must be marked “N.F.S.” in the Price section of the submission form. NO “P.O.R.” (price on request) sales.

Entry Fee: The entry fee is $35 for 1 – 3 works, $5 for each additional work up to 6 total.

Entry Requirements: All entries must be submitted electronically. (See below for link to online submission form.) Judging will be done entirely from JPEGs. No other formats will be accepted. This includes Power Point Presentations or any other imaging software.  JPEGs must be 72 dpi and at least 600 pixels but not greater that 1200 pixels in either direction. Maximum file size for any individual image is 1 MB

JPEG images MUST BE labeled Last Name_FIRST Name_The number that corresponds with that work’s placement on the Entry Form (1, 2, 3, etc.) for example:




Files which are mislabeled or lack the artists’s name will not be viewed by the juror.

Work must be no more than 12" in any direction including the framing or mounting, or video monitors. This will be strictly enforced.The size given for works should be the framed size. Height must be given before width regardless of whether the work is a vertical or a horizontal. The gallery will not correct dimension errors.

Entry form must be filled out completely. Failure to follow instructions may result in the nullification of your entry. Your payment will serve as your acceptance of the terms and conditions stated in this prospectus.

Delivery of Work:

1. Hand-delivered work will be accepted at the gallery ONLY on Saturday, November 19, 11-7pm and Sunday, November 20, 11 noon – 4pm. Packaging may be removed from the gallery at the time of delivery.

2. Shipped work must arrive at the gallery between Friday, November 18 - Tuesday, November 22, in a reusable container. A computer-generated return label for return of work MUST be enclosed. NO EXCEPTIONS. Pre-paid shipping arrangements must be made through UPS or FedEx websites or with other shippers who will pick up work at the gallery. NO U.S. POSTAL SERVICE OR C.O.D. RETURNS. DO NOT SEND CASH, CHECK, STAMPS, OR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION FOR RETURN OF WORK.


Return of Work: Hand-delivered work must be picked up on Thursday, December 29, 4 – 7pm Friday, December 30, 4-7pm or Saturday December 31, 11-4pm. Shipped works will be returned the week of January 2nd. The gallery accepts no responsibility for work not retrieved on pick-up date and will charge the artist $5.00 a day thereafter for storage. After 30 days the gallery may dispose of the work.


Liability: Great care will be taken with all work, but artists are responsible for insuring their own work if they wish. 440 Gallery will not be responsible for any loss or damage to work while on the premises or in transit to or from the gallery. The submission of a work of art to this exhibition shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to the conditions set forth in this prospectus.

DEC 29, Thursday: Pick up of unsold work, 4-7pm

DEC 30, Friday: Pick up of unsold work, 4-7pm

DEC 31, Saturday: Pick up of unsold work, 11-4pm


More About Our Juror

The juror for this year's Small Works Show is JoAnne McFarland, an award winning artist and writer with an extensive exhibition history.  She is the former Exhibitions Director of A.I.R. Gallery, the first artist–run gallery for women artists in the United States. She is a practicing artist and poet with works in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and Columbus Museum of Art among many others. She is the author of eight poetry collections the latest of which is Loose Horse in the Valley. A graduate of Princeton University and Pratt Institute, McFarland also studied painting with Andrew Reiss.
